What Are Nerve Root Blocks?

Nerve root blocks are a minimally invasive pain management procedure designed to reduce pain caused by inflammation or irritation of the spinal nerve roots. By delivering medication directly to the affected nerve, this technique blocks pain signals and provides lasting relief—especially for those with lower back and leg pain.

At Spinal Diagnostics, we use this procedure to treat a range of chronic conditions and help patients move forward with less pain and better function.

How the Procedure Works

The procedure involves injecting an anti-inflammatory medication (often a steroid) near the nerve root that is causing pain. Imaging guidance ensures precise needle placement for maximum effectiveness.

What to expect:

Local anesthesia is applied to the skin.

A thin needle is inserted near the nerve using fluoroscopy (X-ray guidance).

Medication is injected around the nerve root to reduce swelling and irritation.

The whole process typically takes 15 to 30 minutes.

Benefits of Nerve Root Blocks

This treatment offers significant benefits over traditional surgery or long-term medications:

Targeted Pain Relief

Delivers medication directly to the irritated nerve root for precise, localized relief.

Improved Mobility

Many patients return to daily activities with greater ease and comfort.

Reduced Inflammation

Minimizes swelling in the affected area, relieving pressure on spinal nerves.

Minimal Downtime

Quick outpatient procedure with little to no recovery time compared to surgery.

Before & After the Procedure

01 Before the Procedure

Let your doctor know about any medications, allergies, or conditions.

✔ Arrange a ride home driving after the injection is not recommended.

02 After the Procedure

Some soreness or bruising is normal.

✔ Avoid strenuous activity for a few days.

✔ You may notice relief within a few days; full benefits develop gradually.

✔ Follow your provider’s instructions for best results.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Nerve root blocks may be ideal for patients who suffer from:

Herniated Discs

When a spinal disc presses on nearby nerves.

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)

A chronic pain condition typically affecting arms or legs, often with swelling, color changes, or temperature sensitivity.

Sciatica

Pain that radiates along the sciatic nerve, typically down one leg.

Your provider will determine if this treatment is right for you based on your medical history, symptoms, imaging, and response to prior therapies.
